David Phillips is recognized as one of the world’s leading figures in industry development, innovation and leadership. Currently, David manages his own consultancy in Learning and Development, in addition to partnering with several international agencies to drive innovative talent acquisition and management programs. David is also a Sessional Lecturer at La Trobe University in the Diploma of Sport Coaching and Development.
David previously was the National Manager, Coach Development for Tennis Australia, where led the Coach pillar within Tennis Australia’s Participation strategy, conceived and implemented coach development priorities across the network and led the delivery of qualification courses and professional development workshops. David’s team also delivered the national coach membership program in addition to leading the Grand Slam Coaches’ Conference. He is a broadly experienced sport educator with demonstrated capacity in integrating performance standards with academic research in the areas of player development, curriculum development, online learning and instructional design, learning management systems, teacher education, mentorship and program evaluation, teacher education, and facility management.
David holds a Masters of Arts in Higher Education from OISE at the University of Toronto, is a Tennis Canada High Performance Coach and Coaching Association of Canada Master Learning Facilitator and Evaluator as well as holding a High Performance qualification from Squash Canada. He has consulted with numerous national and state sport organizations, as well as commercial and community facilities.
David’s career in coaching and player development spans some 30 years. As a performance coach, David led provincial teams to gold medals in the Canada and Western Canada Games. His players have won numerous national titles and over 40 have achieved full scholarships at US Universities. In 2007 David was awarded the Coaching Association of Ontario High Performance Coaching Excellence Award. He has twice been the Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) Provincial Coach for the Ontario Summer Games (’92, ’94). He was the Ontario and Canada Winter Games Coach for Squash Ontario (’93-’95) and the Canada Games Coach for the Northwest Territories (2005).
David also strongly believes in the necessity for professionals to volunteer in sport. He collaborated with national and international sport organizations to showcase an inaugural professional tennis event in the Prairies (ITF Saskatoon Futures) and received the 2012 Saskatchewan Sports Tourism Award. He was also the OTA’s Vice-President of Player Development from 1994 – 1996 as well as the Instruction Editor in the inaugural year of Ontario Tennis Magazine in 1997.
